Redmine OsmoUPF - Feature #6394 (Stalled): Basic URR (Usage Reporting Rule) support for tunnel mappinghttps://osmocom.org/issues/63942024-03-08T13:33:39Zlaforge

Implement basic support for URR (Usage Reporting Rule).

The goal here is to

count the number of packets and bytes within each TEID (ul/dl separately)

periodically report those counters via PFCP to the control plane

report the final counters when the tunnel is closed

pespin had implemented something like this for open5gs-upf in

commit fb8ebcdbeae0648e30d04fd016a956642131dddd

[UPF] Add initial support for URR Usage Report (#1476)

and following commits.

Now sadly, open5gs-upf is more like a lab-grade upf and nothing that scales at all, and we hence have users of osmo-upf that use it for its fast kernel path.

The primary goal for this feature is the tunnel mapping case in a osmo-hnbgw co-located osmo-upf. The packet and byte counters hence will have to be added to the nftables rules.
pySim - Bug #6317 (Stalled): data driven tests for TLV decodershttps://osmocom.org/issues/63172023-12-23T15:12:32Zlaforge

While we do have the
_test_de_encode
data driven tests for file definitions, we don't yet have something similar for derived classes of BER_TLV_IE. This means that TLVs used outside of the filesystem context (for example, decoding the SELECT/STATUS response, but also eUICC and other stuff) do not yet have test coverage.
SDR (Software Defined Radio) - Feature #5892 (Stalled): design/build ext clock input board for Pl...https://osmocom.org/issues/58922023-02-06T10:04:22Zlaforge

We have a number of plutosdr devices at sysmocom, unfortunately all of them still RevB which unlike current RevD has no external clock input. Most of our use cases require a proper reference clock input, so I thought it might be a good idea to build a small board which contains the LTC6957HMS-3#PBF based input circuitry that was added in RevD. This circuit ensures that any square or sine clock can be used, at proper 50 Ohm impedance, over a wide range of levels.

The ext in / ext out ports should be SMA connectors, so that the resulting PCB can be panel-mounted by bulkhead-mounting those two SMA connectors to a face plate of whatever enclosure we're putting the plutosdr into.

The interconnect between the clock board and plutosdr can be made via u.fl as shown in https://coherent-receiver.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/umc-pluto-site.jpg

Soem initial tests with a PrTel93i doing BERT testing on a single B-channel indicates we have some problems to investigate.

This ticket serves as log of the various tests/attempts so far

PrTel93i against same PrTel93i doing internal call through Auerswald COMmander2 PBX

0 errors in several 1min and 15min calls. So the PrTel and the wiring are good.

PrTel93i against same PrTel93i doing external call through same PBX but going out via icE1usb to OCTOI hub and calling back through the same path:

first 1min call was with 0 errors

first 15min call was with 6.62 E-2 BER

second 15min call was with 5.92 E-2 BER

no lost / reordered OCTOI frames observed during that time

PrTel93i against bchan_loop from capi-hacks (hfc-usb, mISDN, CAPI20) doing internal call through Auerswald COMmander2 PBX

1min call with 4.25 E-1 BER

so clearly there are some problems in the misdn/capi integration

OsmoMSC - Bug #5564 (Stalled): blocking database I/O by SMS databasehttps://osmocom.org/issues/55642022-05-15T14:18:42Zlaforge

when OsmoMSC was split from OsmoNITB, we externalized the HLR database and removed the database-stored counters. This leaves the internal SMS queue / database code as the only remaining part of code which performs potentailly blocking disk I/O.

As seen in #5563 this is a real issue.

I spent half a day on reviewing the code in detail and playing with different ideas, including

ripping out the sms_queue.c / db.c code completely into an external osmo-smsc which then uses GSUP

just moving db.c into a separate thread; make DB operations asynchronous

move sms_queue + db.c into a separate thread

osmo-msc already contains code to do SMS via GSUP, so there's no mandatory modification to osm-msc expected in this approach.

the major disadvantages of this appraoch are:

SMPP code would have to move to SMSC, and it is more tied into the MSC/VLR codebase -> extra effort

GSUP SMS interface is at a lower level than current sms_queue intrface -> extra effort of migrating/reimplementing that stuff in SMSC

I think the following approach is best:

have a separate "SMS" thread

all database access happens from that thread only

inter-thread message queues (libosmocore it_q) between main thread and SMS thread

sms_queue timers (push_queue_timer, resend_pending_timer) run in that thread

other input (mainly signals today) are serialized via it_q in main -> SMS direction

other output (mainly gsm411_send_sms) are serialized via it_q in SMS -> main direction

Serialize SS_SMS signals¶

we really only need to serialize paging_result and sms->id

submit them into it_q to SMS thread

serialize SS_SUBSCR signal¶

sms_subscriber_find_pending() can be done in main thread before serialization

check for vsub->lu_complete and zero MSISDN before serialization

we really only need to serialize the MSISDN

db_sms_get_unsent_for_subscr() then happens from SMS thread

there seems to be some lack of logical clarity how the MGCP endpoint names are constructed for use with E1.

osmo-mgw uses the trunk number to construct the "e1-N" part in "ds/e1-0/s-1/su16-0"

any e1_input line_nr can be mapped to any trunk_nr in the config

osmo-bsc unconditionally uses the e1_input line_nr to construct the "e1-N" part in "ds/e1-0/s-1/su16-0"

This means that the entire setup will only work, if osmo-mgw is confiugred to use the same trunk_nr as e1_input line_nr, which

is weird, as why would you make something configurable if it only works in one way, and

is not mentioned or documented anywhere in either the osmo-mgw or osmo-bsc documentation, and also not really visible from the example configs, AFAICT

So I think we have two ways forward:

make osmo-mgw always use the e1 line_nr for constructing the enpdoint names

allow osmo-bsc to configure the mgw-side trunk number [for each timeslot?]

OsmoBTS - Bug #5242 (Stalled): A-bis/RSL: CRCX ACK indicates '0.0.0.0' as the local/bind addresshttps://osmocom.org/issues/52422021-09-30T09:25:47Zfixeria

Currently both TC_speech_rtp_tchf and TC_speech_rtp_tchh fail, because CRCX ACK from osmo-bts indicates '0.0.0.0' as the local/bind address. The local/bind address of osmo-bts is needed in order to know where to send RTP packets for the RTP_Emulation component, and of course '0.0.0.0' cannot be used as the remote address for send(). See the attached PCAP file.
OsmoPCU - Bug #4879 (Stalled): endless pdch.cpp:809 Got CS-N RLC block: R=0, SI=0, TFI=0, CPS=0, ...https://osmocom.org/issues/48792020-11-29T23:17:31Zfixeria

I just upgraded all osmo-{ran,cni} components to the recent master, and now quite often run into a situation when the MS (at least Sony Ericsson K800i, TEMS) keeps sending the same Uplink block again and again. I am not sure what exactly causes it, but I can reproduce it more or less reliably by starting Opera Mini (http://people.osmocom.org/fixeria/j2me/opera_mini.jar). When started for the first time, Opera initiates the installation process, and this is where the problem usually shows up.

starting from frame 44149, the MS keeps transmitting the same RLC/MAC block ('35bdc794cd2b631285b2d43513'O). Interestingly enough, after each re-transmission the PCU logs "GPRS DL CTRL: PACKET_UPLINK_ACK_NACK", but does not actually send it (dummy RLC/MAC frames are not recorded). And this goes like that unless I turn off the phone. At the same time, Downlink blocks are received and accepted by the MS on the same timeslot.

The final aim of this task is to check if we run into CPU limitations of the Raspi CM3 of the LimeNet-micro when maximizing the channel load even of a single TRX.

Say, for example, 14 concurrent TCH/H with AMR inside on the 7 TS. It would be very interesting to see if that works, and if there is any margin on the CPU left, etc.

Quick way to test manually: Use osmo-bsc connected to osmo-bts-trx and use VTY command "bts <0-255> trx <0-255> timeslot <0-7> sub-slot <0-7> (activate|deactivate) (hr|fr|efr|amr) [<0-7>]"

"Automatic" testing: Use TTCN3, add test to BTS_Tests.ttcn:
As we even have that RTP source and sink you could even send some (random payload) RTP messages if you'd want, they just need to match in size and in terms of the RTP payload type. We don't care about the content of the RTP at all here.
Make sure the config/vty is configured for 7 timeslots at TCH/H and unlimited radio link timeout and then send the 14x CHAN ACT with the right channel mode (and if you want to add RTP, the IPA CRCX/MDCX).
OsmoMSC - Bug #3735 (Stalled): call arriving during another call has no voicehttps://osmocom.org/issues/37352018-12-16T13:25:50Zneelsnhofmeyr@sysmocom.de

SIMtrace 2 - Bug #3379 (Stalled): documentation on how to use SIMtrace2https://osmocom.org/issues/33792018-07-04T16:10:36Zlaforge

the wiki in the SIMtrace2 redmine project currently only documents flashing, but there should of course be good information on how to use the host tools in order to run the complete system.
OsmoBSC - Feature #2893 (Stalled): automatic simulator for large LU load https://osmocom.org/issues/28932018-01-27T16:43:22Zlaforge

Every so often we see systems suffering a lot from large LU load.

There are many tunables like each tx delay/integer, access control class ramping, ms-acces-lv-min ramping, doewnlink poweer ramping, im ass reejct timer, etc

In order to be able to test different configurations and possible patches, we need a reproducible test scenario for benchmarking our performance.

Ideally this shoiuld be possible with osmocombb and virtphy. For just performing a LU, we don't even need scripting. However, we need

starting large number of "mobile"

realistic timing for network scan / cell search (virtphy is too fast)

implementation of downlink attenuation

detection of RACH collisions in bts-virtual

OsmoMSC - Bug #2851 (Stalled): a_iface.c:534 Unhandled SIGTRAN primitive: 3:2https://osmocom.org/issues/28512018-01-21T19:52:32Zlaforge

Every so often I'm seeing the following error message:

<000a> a_iface.c:534 Unhandled SIGTRAN primitive: 3:2

We should

investigate and resolve this

make sure we print string values rather than numeric ones.

OsmocomBB - Feature #2409 (Stalled): Add GPRS support to virt_phy and L1CTLhttps://osmocom.org/issues/24092017-07-29T12:31:13Zlaforge

It should be rather simple to add GPRS support to virt_phy. The more interesting question is how to strucutre the L1CTL interface.

It could simply

get configuration as to which timeslots are relevant to UL/DL TBFs via L1CTL

forward all downlink blocks on any of the related timeslots via L1CTL

transmit uplink blocks as instructed by L1CTL

However, the uplink transmission can be either static, dynamic or extended dynamic allocation. In the dynamic cases, uplink is transmitted whenever the USF of the current downlink block matches the USF of the TBF. This has rather tight timing, as there's only the "3 timeslot" shift between DL and UL.

If this is critical, the L1 (virt_phy in this case) would have to be tightly integrated with the MAC layer in order to decode the USF of the MAC header. Given the USF is the three LSB of every first octet of each downlink block, it should be rather simple to match on that.

Let's investigate what the 3GPP specs have in mind in terms of a L1-SAP between L1 and the MAC layer in GPRS.
SIMtrace 2 - Feature #1912 (Stalled): do proper re-layout of the boardhttps://osmocom.org/issues/19122017-01-12T12:55:08Zlaforge

SIMtrace v1 PCB layout has been serving us well, but is far from ideal in terms of RF return paths and signal integrity.

Let's revisit that when doing a v2 of the hardware
OsmoNITB - Bug #1671 (Stalled): Combined 850/1800 NITB not seen by Option Icon2 stickhttps://osmocom.org/issues/16712016-03-24T06:53:41Zzecke

When having a NITB with one GSM1800 BTS on ARFCN 877 and one on GSM850 on ARFCN 130 (that is not broadcasting), the Icon2 stick failed to join the network. When removing this cell (and hence the neighborcell information) it works immediately. The test was done with a nanoBTS.

Tests:

Make this stable, I had issued another AT+CFUN=0/CFUN=1 today morning and while I did this yesterday it is not a clear call

Test with sysmoBTS and the nanoBTS (e.g. maybe some SIs are not scheduled)

Look if all generated SIs are being sent

Look at the spec if such config is legal..

Look at the generated SIs

Currently it is impossible to send/receive SMS messages and USSD encoded in 8-bit or 16-bit alphabet.
OsmoBSC - Bug #1614 (Stalled): better identification of BTS model / capabilities to BSChttps://osmocom.org/issues/16142016-02-23T16:24:51Zlaforge
Right now, there is a lot of implied knowledge at the BSC level about the BTS, i.e.

the BSC needs to be told which BTS model it is

the BSC needs to be told the nominal transmit power of each TRX

the BSC needs to be told about the codec capabilities, etc.

In order to reduce the currently seemingly endless possbilities how somebody can end up with a non-working
configuration, it would be good if the BTS would express its capabilities towards the BSC. As there is
no standard in the Abis specs for this, we have to come up with a mechanism of our own.

It might be a vendor-specific OML request from BSC to BTS, which we could use to determine from BSC side if the BTS supports this request at all (if not, proceed as usual). This would also ensure backwards compatibility with nanoBTS or older OsmoBTS versions.
OsmoPCU - Feature #1545 (Stalled): continuous timing advance loop using PTCCHhttps://osmocom.org/issues/15452016-02-23T15:02:54Zlaforge

We currently only implement the "initial TA" where the TA of a MS is determined at time the TBF is established. If the MS moves more than 1 TA during a TBF being active, this leads to problems.

GPRS has the PTCCH for this, a special channel in the PDCH channel combination multiplex, using which we can instruct a sub-set of 16 MS (whether TBFs are active or not) to adjust their timing advance continuously. What needs to be done is

code to generate the PTCCH/D messages

code to parse the PTCCH/U messages

code to determine which 16 MS will be part of the current PTCCH subset

unit tests for the above

We also need to see how we can test this with actual hardware, in a way that TA exists (and changes) over time. Unfortuantely we don't have a MS-side GPRS implementation for OsmocomBB, because then we could simply artificially delay the transmit burst timing to make the network determine a higher TA.
OsmoPCU - Feature #1526 (Stalled): Acquire/update timing advance (TA)https://osmocom.org/issues/15262016-02-22T20:59:31Zzecke

Currently the TA is derived from the initial RACH request and never updated during the lifetime of a TBF.

Is this handled correctly for network initiated DL TBF establishment?

TS 44.018, 3.5.3.1.2 asks for TA determination on DL TBF establshment if the MS is idle and the TA is not known (see "If the network does not have a valid timing advance ...").

Other related issues:

The burst timing info (qta) should be applied (see #1705)

Support access bursts on PDCH which can be requested by the PCU if the current TA is unknown (44.060)
