Redmine OsmoNITB - Bug #1671 (Stalled): Combined 850/1800 NITB not seen by Option Icon2 stickhttps://osmocom.org/issues/16712016-03-24T06:53:41Zzecke

When having a NITB with one GSM1800 BTS on ARFCN 877 and one on GSM850 on ARFCN 130 (that is not broadcasting), the Icon2 stick failed to join the network. When removing this cell (and hence the neighborcell information) it works immediately. The test was done with a nanoBTS.

Tests:

Make this stable, I had issued another AT+CFUN=0/CFUN=1 today morning and while I did this yesterday it is not a clear call

Test with sysmoBTS and the nanoBTS (e.g. maybe some SIs are not scheduled)

Look if all generated SIs are being sent

Look at the spec if such config is legal..

Look at the generated SIs

Description
In case of MS RA Capability container "Content_t", there is no dedicated field to denote the existence of 3GPP release in the message. The encoder goes out of max length allowed for release supported and encodes incorrectly.
Example vector with failure:
vector1 = 40165e000000268ca2a050740440000000300b2b2b2b2b
vector2 = 40165e00000026d0a2a0507400000220000000180b2b2b
vector1 == vector2 : FALSE

Proposal:
For this, we shall have precomputed value of length to terminate the container encoding before calling Content_Dissector in csn1.cpp file. The pre computing length logic routine shall consider the presence of different 3GPP releases.

For example in case of release 5 RA capability message , encoder should be able to code only till release 5 fields . In case of release 6 RA capability, encoder must be able to code till release 6. This release information must be available to the encoder to calculate length. Decoder will set the release field based on the fields present in the message.
OsmoPCU - Bug #1624 (New): add CRBB support to write_packet_ack_nack_desc_egprshttps://osmocom.org/issues/16242016-02-25T17:23:58Zmsuraev

According to TS 44.060 ยง12.3.1 EGPRS Ack/Nack Description can use compressed block bitmaps.
At the moment there is todo code plug which forces use of URBB makes coverity unhappy (CID 1351734).
Note: this would require extending osmo_t4_encode() into proper encoder with backtracking instead of current "best guess" approach.
OsmoBSC - Bug #1614 (Stalled): better identification of BTS model / capabilities to BSChttps://osmocom.org/issues/16142016-02-23T16:24:51Zlaforge
Right now, there is a lot of implied knowledge at the BSC level about the BTS, i.e.

the BSC needs to be told which BTS model it is

the BSC needs to be told the nominal transmit power of each TRX

the BSC needs to be told about the codec capabilities, etc.

In order to reduce the currently seemingly endless possbilities how somebody can end up with a non-working
configuration, it would be good if the BTS would express its capabilities towards the BSC. As there is
no standard in the Abis specs for this, we have to come up with a mechanism of our own.

It might be a vendor-specific OML request from BSC to BTS, which we could use to determine from BSC side if the BTS supports this request at all (if not, proceed as usual). This would also ensure backwards compatibility with nanoBTS or older OsmoBTS versions.
Cellular Network Infrastructure - Bug #1612 (New): more configuration consistency checkinghttps://osmocom.org/issues/16122016-02-23T16:22:14Zlaforge

Right now it is possible to configure various things that wouldn't work, like an ARFCN that is outside the band of the BTS, or even the TRX.

More consistency checks would make sense, together with reasonable error messages.
OsmoBTS - Bug #1577 (New): mph_send_config_logchpar doesn't update encryption confighttps://osmocom.org/issues/15772016-02-23T15:39:16Zlaforge

In A-bis, the BSC is permitted to change the encryption parameters of an
active logical channel via a "RSL MODE MODIFY" message. osmo-bts-sysmo
doesn't pass along this information to the L1, which is a violation of
the specification.

OpenBSC seems to only set encryption parameters during channel
activation or during the CIPHERING MODE COMMAND but not modify it later.
However, the code for sending encryption information as part of RSL MODE
MODIFY is implemented in libbsc/abis_rs.lc:rsl_chan_mode_modify_req()
OsmoPCU - Bug #1550 (New): Cell reselection under network controlhttps://osmocom.org/issues/15502016-02-23T15:06:21Zlaforge

We currently only implement "Normal MS Control" known as NC0. This means that the MS performs autonomous cell reselection, like in GSM idle mode. Unlike GSM, this is the case even while TBF are active.

GPRS specifies NC1 and NC2 methods. In the latter, the cell re-selection is under network control; The MS Sends measurement reports to the network, and the network instructs the MS to switch.
UmTRX - Bug #1505 (New): OHM4 footprint incorrecthttps://osmocom.org/issues/15052016-02-19T22:52:48Z

OHM4 footprint incorrect.

[Migrated from old Google Code tracker]
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1480 (New): A5/3 is not deployed in GSM networkshttps://osmocom.org/issues/14802016-02-19T22:51:58Zlaforge

The 3GPP has specified the Kasumi-derived A5/3 cipher for use in GSM networks. This would significantly increase the confidentiality and security of the GSM network, since it avoids the known-weak and known-broken A5/1 cipher. The passive A5/1 key-cracking attacks would no longer work.

In order to use A5/3, both the MS and the BTS will have to implement the A5/3 cipher, and the BSC will have to configure the BTSs to actually use it.

Many modern phones (whether 3G or not) support A5/3 operation on GSM and indicate this capability in their CLASSMARK.

However, none of the networks we have seen are using A5/3 on GSM.

Thus, the operators and/or equipment manufacturers are actively preventing a higher level of security and confidentiality.
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1481 (New): Random LAPDm MAC-block padding is not deployed yethttps://osmocom.org/issues/14812016-02-19T22:51:58Zlaforge

Recent versions of TS 44.006 (Version >= 6.7.0 from October 2008) specify that the BTS shall use randomized padding (fill bits) in its Layer2 frames.

This will help to combat the known passive A5/1 cracking attacks that rely on a small portion of known plaintext.

By using randomized padding, the amount of known plaintext can be reduced.

However, as of 07/2010, no network has been found to use this randomized padding.
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1482 (New): Sending the TMSI of the old/previous networkhttps://osmocom.org/issues/14822016-02-19T22:51:58Ztnt

On LOCATION UPDATING REQUEST some handsets do not clear their TMSI and send a TMSI of a foreign network to us. This means we know IMSI, IMEI and TMSI from the previous network.

( from http://openbsc.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/HandsetBugs )
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1483 (New): USSD state is not reset when switching cellshttps://osmocom.org/issues/14832016-02-19T22:51:58Z

USSD support on a phone can be disabled by sending ussdNotify and not sending a releaseComplete. Other USSD commands will not be processed by the phone until the releaseComplete command is send.

The Phone Stack assumes that all USSD operations originate/termate from/at its HLR.
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1477 (New): RACH flood DoShttps://osmocom.org/issues/14772016-02-19T22:51:57Zlaforge

On the RACH (part of the CCCH/BCCH), the number of RACH slots per unit of time is fixed. The maximum possible number of RACH slots with a single-timeslot CCCH is 200.

Furthermore, the number of available dedicated (control and traffic) channels is limited in any given cell.

As per the GSM specification, any newly-assigned dedicated channel has to stay assigned for 2 seconds, waiting for the MS to establish the radio link layer. Only after 2 seconds, the channel can be closed and re-used for other purposes.

If anyone can send more RACH requests (in 2 seconds) than the cell has dedicated channels, permanent resource exhaustion of dedicated channels will happen (in other words, a DoS).

As the RACH request can be hand-crafted by the attacker and sent at a timing chosen by the attacker, there is no possibility for the BTS to differentiate real from malicious RACH bursts.

This attack has been implemented in 2009 by Dieter Spaar, and has been publicly demonstrated at the Deepsec 2009 conference in Vienna.

Slides are available from http://www.mirider.com/GSM-DoS-Attack_Dieter_Spaar.pdf
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1478 (New): IMSI DETACH DoShttps://osmocom.org/issues/14782016-02-19T22:51:57Zadmin

In GSM networks that use the IMSI ATTACH/DETACH procedure, the IMSI DETACH message is not authenticated.

A malicious attacker knowing the IMSI or TMSI of a victim can thus send hand-crafted IMSI DETACH messages to a cell, causing the network to assume the MS is no longer present in the network.

This will effectively prevent the delivery of all mobile-terminated (MT) services, such as SMS, voice calls, CSD, ...

This flaw was first discovered in May 2010 by Sylvain Munaut.
Mobile (in)Security - Bug #1479 (New): MTK stack unable to send MO-SMS on TCH/Fhttps://osmocom.org/issues/14792016-02-19T22:51:57Zlaforge

When a phone with MTK chipset (and firmware) wants to send a MO-SMS, it is unable to deliver that SMS if the BTS/BSC assign a TCH/F.

The MS will respond to the IMMEDIATE ASSIGN with a CM SERVICE ACCEPT, but will never send any CP-DATA. After some time, the BTS/BSC will close the channel again.

It is well within the authority of the network to decide which channel type to assign to the MS, and there is no technical reason why SMS delivery should not be done over the FACCH.
OsmocomBB - Bug #1462 (New): ../../src/utils.c:182:7: error: only weak aliases are supported in t...https://osmocom.org/issues/14622016-02-19T22:48:42Z

Right now setting both the unit id and the OML address does not work. The BTS is restarted after the first ack. There should be some kind of job queue.. or at least an ACK counter.
OsmoBSC - Bug #69 (New): No timers for various callshttps://osmocom.org/issues/692016-02-19T22:47:33Z

Testing with the FakeBTS has shown various issues. This could be split into several tickets if we ever start to do something about it:

1.) It is possible to send MDCX without a CRCX (in case the bts/ms does not respond to the channel mode modify)

2.) Not sending mode modify ack from the BTS triggers T10 but the channel is not taken down.
OsmoNITB - Bug #70 (New): nitb crashes in the rtp_proxy when a phone on a MT-call sends a 'CONNEC...https://osmocom.org/issues/702016-02-19T22:47:33Z

Using the FakeBTS it is possible to crash nitb on a MT-call. It appears to that if the MS sends a CALL CONFIRMED and then a CONNECT the rtp_socket is not fully setup and when one attempts to bridge them we have a crash.
OsmoNITB - Bug #72 (New): struct gsm_call can leak..https://osmocom.org/issues/722016-02-19T22:47:33Z

During BTS testing I saw that gsm_call appears to be leaked.

Setup:
sysmoBTS... configure the bind IP wrongly so the CRCX will be NACKED..

Place a call to an unattached subscriber. Hangup immediately after placing the call, sometimes wait for the network error indication. This was tested with a E71.

OsmoBSC - Bug #73 (New): Kill the paging_init_if_needed method in paging.chttps://osmocom.org/issues/732016-02-19T22:47:33Z

We should call this function after the bts is created. This needs to work even when adding BTS during the runtime of the application.
OsmoMSC - Bug #41 (New): Numbering Plan in OsmoMSChttps://osmocom.org/issues/412016-02-19T22:47:32Z

What is the numbering for the extension? E.g. our subscriber code works with subscr_get_by_extension(...) but we treat all extensions the same. E.g. we ignore the Type of the Number and the Numbering Plan.

Also storing an extension number with '+' as subscriber 1 and then trying to send SMS will create a malformed SMS.
OsmoNITB - Bug #48 (New): Periodic timer and paginghttps://osmocom.org/issues/482016-02-19T22:47:32Z

We set the lac to invalid in case paging fails but this should be co-ordinated with periodic LU. Right now we 'purge' it from the VLR.
OsmoNITB - Bug #54 (New): osmo-nitb keeps rtp-proxy socket open in case no DLCX_IND is senthttps://osmocom.org/issues/542016-02-19T22:47:32Z

sysmobts was sending a wrong DLCX IND, this kept the rtp proxy socket open, on second call the code sends a MDCX early on.
OsmoBTS - Bug #57 (New): sysmobts L1 is not properly closed, DSP firmware reload is requiredhttps://osmocom.org/issues/572016-02-19T22:47:32Zlaforge

We should investigate what is not properly closed and try to make it work again without requiring DSP firmware reload before osmo-bts restart
OsmoNITB - Bug #21 (New): we don't see CHANnel ReQireD from motorola EZX phones at call setuphttps://osmocom.org/issues/212016-02-19T22:47:31Zlaforge

This is very weird. The EZX phones like E6, A1200, etc. can do a successful LOCATION UPDATING procedure, but after they are registered they can only process incoming calls.

so paging request is working, and the channel request procedure is working as part of the paging request and the location updating.

IF you want to start a MO call, we never see any channel required (i.e. RACH burst).
OsmoNITB - Bug #28 (New): Old siemens phones cannot make voice calls (04.08 channel mode)https://osmocom.org/issues/282016-02-19T22:47:31Zlaforge

Some older Siemens phones, notably the S11, implicitly reject the 04.08 CHANNEL MODE MODIFY from signalling to VOICE mode, thus all
voice calls fail.

Either they do not support very early assignment, or we are sending the mode modify a bit too soon for their state machines.
OsmoBSC - Bug #34 (New): ipaccess init code needs proper state machineshttps://osmocom.org/issues/342016-02-19T22:47:31Z

The BSC Init code should be changed from reacting to BTS events to actively driving the bring up and having a state (e.g. to know which message didn't arrive). Each ACK/NACK should trigger a state transition in the bringup.

The difficult part is to make it work across firmware versions and models.
OsmoNITB - Bug #37 (New): RTP Proxy dealing with SSRC change and sequence numbershttps://osmocom.org/issues/372016-02-19T22:47:31Z

The rtp_proxy.c code should detect if the SSRC of the input is changing and only then determine the difference in sequence numbers. It should also not try to change the presentation time of one sample to make up the lost ones.
OsmoNITB - Bug #38 (New): subscr_update should sync database before dispatching the signalhttps://osmocom.org/issues/382016-02-19T22:47:31Z

The subscr_update routine should synchronize the database before dispatching the signal. Right now the db code to find unset SMS will fail if a given subscriber is not attached and then re-attaches to the network.
