http(s)://planet.osmocom.org hosts bogus content:
  • Welcome to nginx! in http
  • An "AMAZE ADMIN" dashboard in https

Both dig planet.osmocom.org A and dig planet.osmocom.org AAAA shows that it's a CNAME:

planet.osmocom.org.     40288    IN    CNAME    hydra.openmoko.org.

For instance:

$ dig planet.osmocom.org A

; <<>> DiG 9.16.15 <<>> planet.osmocom.org A

I was told by Harald Welte on IRC that he has a backup of that server but lacks the time to do that right now because the old planet used planet which didn't have any new release for 14 years so far.

As I understood from IRC, Harald is probably very busy, and the "new servers" run Debian.

So a way to restore the planet would be to find a maintained planet software, preferably one that is still packaged in recent Debian releases and has not been removed in the next Debian releases (in order to lower the amount of time spent maintaining it).

At the time of writing, there is a planet-venus package package in Debian buster but not in the subsequent Debian versions.

So if in the future there are other planet software packaged in Debian or maybe if there are easy to install planet software that is maintained with extremely low maintenance cost (in time) it could be restored.

I've meanwhile created a lxc container that runs Debian buster with planet-venus and the old configs. For some reason the templates don't seem to render, but at least the content ist there.

It will take some time for the DNS changes to propagate.

I was told in #osmocom that ikiwiki can also do aggregation and that https://updo.debian.net/ was using that.

Since ikiwiki is in Debian (including buster, bullseye, sid, and experimental) it probably requires very few maintenance.

replaced the customized themes with stock themes from planet-venus as shipping in debian buster for now.

Question of a long-term maintainable solution beyond Debian10 still open.
