Description

Sometimes, after starting osmo-bsc, The BTS will transmit, we even start to get Channel requests, but this is the status:

OsmoBSC# show trx
TRX 0 of BTS 0 is on ARFCN 251
RF Nominal Power: 37 dBm, reduced by 0 dB, resulting BS power: 37 dBm
Radio Carrier NM State: Oper 'NULL', Admin 'Unlocked', Avail 'Power off'

  E1 Signalling Link:
    E1 Line 0, Type e1d: Timeslot 1, Mode RSL

and of course we get such as this:

DRLL DEBUG <0000> lchan_select.c:299 (bts=0) lchan_select_by_type(TCH_F)

DRLL NOTICE <0000> lchan_select.c:305 (bts=0) Failed to select TCH_F channel

Stopping and restarting osmo-bsc will sooner ( or later :-/ ) get the TRX up....

Attached is osmo-bsc.log of the bring-up and pcap of same.

I suspect there is something happening in a certain order sometimes that causes this?

By any chance is the TRX well cooled ?

In at least one case where this is observed, the TRX (RUS 01) is mounted in an RBS 6601 - (with rear fans running at full speed as there's nothing to connect to the EC)

Hello Keith,

Thats interesting. I also have issues with the DUG20 I am using for tests. It seems not to like frequent BSC restarts. I see the "TRX 0 not usable" message quite often. A power-cycle usually helps. Can you post your osmo-bsc.cfg as well?

Best regards.

Hi dexter I don't have the actual config that would have been used when I wrote this six month old ticket. The DUG that was in use died, and it's not the first one we have lost. I don't have a DUG deployed anywhere right now, not even in the lab, as the lab moved house and I have not got around to setting up an antenna rig yet.

That makes 2 we've lost after not so many hours of operation, (apart from the units where we destroyed the serial port with +36V on the GND rail- they still work otherwise) - I have a suspicion that dust might be the culprit. Not that this is related to this issue, I just wonder whether we can expect a DUG to survive if we are blasting cooling air through it that is not filtered or at least reasonably dust free, (IE, not in a wooden hut on top of a windy hill in a semi-desert)

Anyway, the config would have been fairly "standard", that is to say, not much deviation from the example configs that ship with osmo-bsc. One thing possibly relevant would be the sync. IIRC, I see this ticket's issue regardless of if there is a GPS unit present and sync is external, or if we take the clock from the icE1usb
