A DSL-modem style 56k modem. Instead of using a serial connection to connect your PC it offers an ethernet connection.
PPPoE-client <-> [RJ45|ethernet with PPPoE-server - 56k-modem|RJ11] <-> POTS
You have to pass the AT-commands for the modem in the PPPoE service name.
