GSM Retronetworking

This project is devoted to treating GSM (aka 2G) cellular telephony as a subject of retronetworking, in contrast to whatever few commercial applications may still exist for this technology. The following topics are welcome under the umbrella of this project:

  • Old GSM network infrastructure components, particularly TDM-based ones: historical MSCs, historical BSCs, historical TRAUs;
  • Lore about various extant commercial GSM networks around the world, various quirks that can be explored and documented;
  • Efforts to build and deploy new GSM networks for the sole purpose of providing service to vintage mobile phones;
  • Old GSM phones, chipsets and development boards, from a lorekeeping perspective;
  • Emphasis on non-AMR speech codecs, as needed in networks that primarily serve old phones.
