Apparently, C99 has introduced flexible array members (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexible_array_member) while we still use the ancient, much older gcc specific syntax of [0]
length arrays.
The main advantage of the flexible array approach are that the compiler allegedly ensures there are no struct members following the [] member.
