h1. LAN Technology
Today, the various flavours of [[Ethernet]] and its wireless cousin WiFi are the predominant L1/L2 for networking, both in the LAN and the WAN.
This was not always the case. In earlier decades, there was a much larger variety of alternate networking techologies out there, including
* AppleTalk / LocalTalk
* DECnet
* [[FDDI]]
* [[Token_Ring]]
* [[Arcnet]]
* [[Ethernet]]
