Description

Right now there is no properly designated place in Osmocom hierarchy for discussion, tracking and knowledge-keeping about retro-GSM. Everything under Cellular Network Infrastructure division is geared toward development of new CNI components, particularly those that are or might be of interest to commercial entities who fund Osmocom through sysmocom, whereas the current scope of Retronetworking division appears to be strictly non-GSM topics. Where is the correct place then for all of the following:

  • Old GSM network infrastructure components, particularly TDM-based ones: historical MSCs, historical BSCs, historical TRAUs
  • Lore about various extant commercial GSM networks around the world, various quirks that can be explored and documented
  • Old GSM phones, chipsets and development boards, from a lorekeeping perspective

Hence I propose creating a new Redmine (sub)project for retro-GSM, scoped to include the above. Placing this subproject under Retronetworking seems sensible to me, although of course if more senior leaders prefer a different placement in the hierarchy, no objection from me.

I'm trying to do this, but for some reason redmine does not permit me to use the "inherit members" for this newly-created sub-project of Retronetworking. I have no idea why. Even when I manually set the flag in the SQL database, the members of the parent project are not listed. With tons of redmine experience in multiple installations I've never seen this happen... WTF.

This is likely caused by invalid member records in the parent project, see #6468

finally this could be completed. You're a "manager" of that redmine project now; let me know if anything should still not work yet. The users are inherited from the retronetworking [parent] project.
